New Beginnings: When Moving Forward Means Leaving the Past Behind Promises Behavioral Health

To the extent that you have common interests and likes, keep in mind that these may be just the right choices for friendship – as long as the feeling is mutual. The best part about cultivating new friends is that they will fill the void left by leaving your past behind. Worse yet, you have absolutely no control over what might happen should things go haywire and you are right there in the presence of temptation. It’s best to steer clear of any association from your past that brings to mind anything you did while in the grip of your addiction. Maybe that dear friend will one day come to the decision to go into treatment and get clean and sober. Maybe, but it will have to be of his or her own volition.

Another way is that individuals must be willing to help others, so they/ can help themselves. If you are in recovery, you must step out of your comfort zone to assist the person new to recovery down the right path. There are times when you will have to do whatever it takes to hit your reset button.

Addiction Treatment Programs

When you find yourself struggling, remember what it was like before your recovery began. It could have been when your binge drinking nearly killed you. The use of quotes and inspirational words is nearly limitless, so apply them liberally to your life. Try using quotes as journal prompts, affirmations, or milestone checkpoints in your daily life.

Community Volunteer Opportunities

The important thing is to not fall back into a life of addiction. I moved into a sober house that had a culture of recovery and lived there for 18 months. Afterwards I went back to school to become a drug and alcohol counselor. Shortly after graduation, the first recovery house was opened. Our program of recovery also values peer support, which has brought great success in changing many lives.

This may be the most difficult and important prompt on your journey. We cannot be good at everything we try, and that’s something to be grateful for. Practice sitting comfortably with the thought of being just Hope House Boston Review okay at something.

You don’t have to sabotage a future life in recovery over a current crisis. Mistakes, messes, and setbacks don’t mean the end of a painting, and they won’t stop you from flourishing in life either. Life is constantly building, doing, feeling, and being.

It’s January—a time when many reflect on the past year and make one – or a few – New Year’s resolutions. For some it’s to lose weight, for others it may be to finally get organized and ready for the coming year. Regardless of what your personal vow may be, New Year’s resolutions are about new beginnings. Find room for the practice of accepting (and if you’re ambitious, celebrating) mediocrity in some of your skills or experiences. You do not have to be great or even good at something for it to have a worthwhile benefit in this part of your story.
